Sarah Billups

Sara Billups is an author, cultural commentator, and writing teacher whose work explores American Christian identity, anxiety, and belonging. She has written two books with Baker Books. Orphaned Believers (2023) is part spiritual memoir of an apocalyptic childhood, part reckoning with growing up evangelical during the culture wars. Nervous Systems (2025) is part memoir of caregiving in the sandwich generation. It also looks at the personal and collective worry so many of us carry, and offers practical, hopeful ways to live well in its presence.

Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Christianity Today, Aspen Ideas, Ekstasis, and on the BBC. She writes Bitter Scroll on Substack. In 2024, Sara earned her Doctor of Ministry in the Sacred Art of Writing from the Eugene Peterson Center for Christian Imagination at Western Theological Seminary. She taught the 2026 Collegeville Workshop, "Writing in an Anxious Age," and is an alum of the Aspen Institute's Executive Seminar on Leadership, Values, and the Good Society.

Sara lives on an acre outside Seattle, among fruit trees that always need tending. She shares it with her husband, a priest, their two teenagers, and two Australian Shepherds. She serves on the vestry at her church. She also once took third place in a junior high bowling tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
